Overview of Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells, most often triggered by cumulative ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight or tanning beds. It typically falls into two main categories: nonmelanoma and melanoma. Nonmelanoma skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), are more common and generally highly treatable when caught early. Melanoma is less common but more aggressive, with a greater potential to spread if not detected and treated promptly. Types of Skin Cancer

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
SCC originates in the squamous cells of the epidermis and is the second most common type of skin cancer. It can develop on any part of the body but is often found on the ears, lips, face, neck, and back of the hands. SCC may appear as a firm red nodule, a flat sore with a scaly crust, or a new sore or raised area on an old scar or ulcer. While most SCCs are treatable, they have a higher likelihood than BCCs of spreading to lymph nodes and other organs if not addressed. Treatment options include surgical excision, electrodesiccation and curettage, radiation, and topical therapies, depending on the size, location, and depth of the tumor.
Melanoma
Melanoma develops from melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment, and is the most serious form of skin cancer due to its potential to metastasize. It can arise from an existing mole or appear as a new dark spot on the skin. The ABCDEs of melanoma are commonly used to spot possible warning signs: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter larger than 6 millimeters, and Evolving size, shape, or color. Other signs include a sore that does not heal, spread of pigment beyond the border of a spot, or changes in sensation such as itching or tenderness. Early detection and treatment are critical, as melanoma caught at an early stage often has an excellent prognosis, while advanced melanoma requires more complex, systemic therapies.
Risk Factors
Multiple factors can increase the likelihood of developing skin cancer, and understanding these helps contextualize prevention and screening strategies.
- UV exposure: Intense intermittent sun exposure and sunburns, as well as tanning bed use, significantly raise risk.
- Skin type: People with fair skin, light hair, and light eyes have less melanin protection and are generally at higher risk.
- Moles: Having many moles or atypical moles can increase the chance of melanoma.
- Personal history: A previous skin cancer diagnosis raises the risk of a new occurrence.
- Family history: A close relative with melanoma can signal shared genetic or environmental risks.
- Age and geography: Risk tends to increase with age and is higher in regions with strong sunlight and high altitudes.

Self-Skin Checks
Regular self-exams help you become familiar with your skin and notice changes promptly. Use a full-length mirror and a handheld mirror to inspect all areas, including the scalp, back, and between the toes. The Skin Cancer Foundation and many dermatologists recommend performing a professional skin exam annually and doing a thorough self-skin check monthly. Pay special attention to any new, changing, itching, or bleeding lesions, and document changes with dated photos for comparison over time.
Professional Exams and Tests
When a suspicious lesion is identified, a dermatologist will typically perform a full-body skin exam and may use dermoscopy to magnify and evaluate pigment patterns. If a lesion appears concerning, a biopsy is the definitive diagnostic step. This involves removing all or part of the growth and sending it to a pathology lab for analysis. Depending on the type and stage, further tests such as imaging or sentinel lymph node biopsy may be recommended to assess whether the cancer has spread beyond the skin.

Surgical and Local Therapies
For many BCCs and SCCs, surgical excision with clear margins provides a high cure rate. Mohs micrographic surgery is commonly used for tumors on the face or ears, removing thin layers of tissue one at a time and examining them under a microscope until no cancer cells remain. Other local treatments include electrodesiccation and curettage, cryotherapy, and laser therapy, often suitable for superficial or low-risk lesions. For melanoma, wide local excision to remove the tumor and a margin of healthy tissue is standard; in some cases, a sentinel lymph node biopsy helps determine whether cancer has spread regionally.
Advanced and Systemic Therapies
When melanoma or advanced SCC has spread, systemic treatments become important. These may include targeted therapies that interfere with specific mutations driving cancer growth, immunotherapies that help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells, and chemotherapy in certain situations. The choice of therapy depends on genetic markers, PD-L1 status, prior treatments, and overall health. Participation in clinical trials may offer additional options and contribute to ongoing research.
Prevention and Sun Safety
Preventing skin cancer involves consistent habits that reduce UV damage over time, making sun protection an everyday practice rather than an occasional effort.
- Seek shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.
- Wear protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses.
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, applying it generously 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplying every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
- Avoid tanning beds, which emit UV radiation that increases skin cancer risk.
- Perform regular skin self-exams and schedule annual professional skin exams.
- Be mindful of photosensitizing medications and discuss sun-safety strategies with your healthcare provider.
When to See a Dermatologist
Certain changes in your skin warrant prompt evaluation by a dermatologist. If you notice a new growth that bleeds or does not heal, a mole that changes in size, shape, or color, or any spot that itches, burns, or becomes tender, schedule an appointment without delay. People with many moles, fair skin, a personal or family history of skin cancer, or a weakened immune system should discuss a regular surveillance plan with their dermatologist. Early evaluation can distinguish harmless conditions from those requiring treatment and peace of mind.
